End of the Road

Linfield found the road to Salem was a little too long especially when it winds through Dover, Delaware.

The Wildcats' season ended over 2500 miles away from where it started in September after the Wesley Wolverines rode a series of uncharacteristic mistakes and lapses by Linfield to eradicate a 20-point Linfield halftime lead. Wesley scored 42 unanswered points in the second half to continue on to the Quarterfinals in the DIII playoffs.

Brent's football career also ended this weekend about 5000 miles away from where it started back in his eighth grade year at St. Louis. It was a very memorable ride for Juliet and me. And I know Brent feels very fortunate for the opportunities and experiences he had.

It will be a lot different for all of us now that both of the boys are done playing organized sports but we'll look forward to whatever is down that road.

Trying out my new Smartphone today.

So far, so good. I saw it on sale at Radio Shack for $49.99; AT&T wanted $199 for it.

It's a 4g phone and I was able to keep my Unlimited Data Plan and so far it seems like a great bargain. It's fast!

It has a 8mp camera and looks like the reviews were right...it takes nice photos.

Round One Down

The Wildcats used all but 33 seconds of the full 60 minutes of gametime to once again knock Cal Lutheran out of the playoffs, 30-27 at Maxwell Field this past Saturday.

It was the third straight year that the two teams have met in the first round with Linfield coming out ahead all three times.

This one was a nail-biter as the Kingsmen from California fought back from a 20-3 deficit to come within a Field Goal from tying the game as time was running out.

A blocked field goal secured the win in the last minute of play and led to a happy Wildcat greeting after the game.

The team will travel across the country to face Wesley College in Dover, Delaware on Saturday.

d3football.com's #5 ranked Linfield will be matched against #8 Cal Lutheran in the First Round for the third consecutive year. This will be the 5th time that they are playing each other in the past 3 seasons.

CalLu fans must be frustrated at not being tabbed for a home game in the opening round especially since SCIAC (Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) runner-up, #14 Redlands, was also included in the tournament and sent on the road to face the top seed in the bracket, #4 Mary Hardin-Baylor in Texas.

This was one of many perplexing things that seem to occur with yearly regularity in the NCAA Selection Committee's decisions. There seems to be a heavy bias against the West-coast teams in terms of seeding and travel:

Four of the eight teams in the bracket with Linfield finished in the d3football.com Top Ten
Seven of the eight finished in the Top 20
#3 St. Thomas (St. Paul, MN) is a #1 seed in a bracket that has NO other teams ranked higher than #11 Delaware Valley
#1 Wisconsin-Whitewater, also a #1 seed has only #10 Salisbury in its bracket and 3 other teams in the Top 20.
The final top seed, #2 Mount Union has two Top Ten teams in its bracket but also includes teams ranked #22, #25, #38, #39 and one unranked automatic qualifier.

Another oddity comes in the second round where the winner of the Linfield-CalLu game, barring an upset by #31 Hobart, would likely face #7 Wesley in Delaware! d3football.com feels that Wesley may have been the best team to not make the DivIII finals in the past 2-3 seasons.

Finally, besides the tough draw in the bracket looking forward should Linfield be fortunate enough to keep winning the travel schedule would likely criss-cross the nation and add to the difficulty. If form holds according to rankings the Wildcats would play at home the first week; Wesley in Dover, DE; Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, TX; Mount Union in Alliance, OH then finally to Salem, VA for the Stagg Bowl.

That's a lot of frequent flyer miles!

Senior Day at Linfield

Saturday was also Brent's last regular season home game. The school honored 24 Seniors by recognizing them and their families just before the game.

We waited on the sideline until Brent came for us. He handed a rose to Juliet and we all stood in a line in front of the rest of the team. Each Senior was introduced along with their families for recognition. Brent made sure that his brother was with us on the field; that's something he wanted to make sure they both shared.

It was a very special moment.

Championship Saturday in Mac

We are back in McMinnville today for what we thought when we originally planned it, would be Brent's Senior Game and final regular season home game. Instead, because of a resurgent Lewis & Clark team the importance of the game has skyrocketed.

The Pioneers lost their first game of the year last week to Willamette and although it was also a Northwest Conference loss can still walk away with the automatic bid into the NCAA playoffs if they can get past Linfield today.

The 'Cats won, 47-14 and claimed the outright Northwest Conference title. Along with that comes the automatic bid into the playoffs.

The wait for the official seeding will last until Sunday afternoon. Then they find out who and where they will play in the first round. It's almost certain that they will be home for their first game but the opponent is open to pretty wild speculation.

Our first stop was at Yamhill Valley Vineyards

Conference Play Begins

Linfield opened Northwest Conference play by travelling to Salem to face Willamette on Saturday.

These two teams have won the past 4 Conference titles and were predicted to be 1 and 2 again this season.

In a game that was marred by almost a dozen fumbles because of heavy rain, the Wildcats prevailed, 20-10 and took a huge step towards repeating as Champions for the third straight year.

There are many more games to be played but this was a big one to get over.

Brent played his best game at Linfield and ended up with 5 tackles including 2 assists in Tackles for Loss (TFL) and one Forced Fumble!

Conference Play This Week

Made it in to Las Vegas this morning for the UH-UNLV game.
Checked in and had a nice breakfast with SteveM and Rasu Begasu.

After some downtime the same trio met up for dinner at the buffet at Golden Nugget.

Downtown was hoppin' with Hawaii fans out in force at all the popular hotels: The Cal, Main Street and the Nugget. I didn't make it to the Fremont but it was probably the same.

Wildcats Win Season Opener

It's a big day as the Wildcats take the field for the first time this season against Cal Lutheran in McMinnville.

Linfield ended the Kingsmens' season in the first round of the playoffs last November and also avenged their season opening loss from last season to Cal Lu in Thousand Oaks.

Brent gets his first ever start for Linfield today which really kicks up the excitement level. He'll be playing DE today and for his Senior year has decided to switch to #92 in honor of his brother who wore that number at Eastern Oregon for 4 years.

One hour prior to that game the Warriors kickoff their first road game this season at Husky Stadium in Seattle. We're looking forward to that to see if these Warriors are really going to be able to make some big things happen this year.

Linfield survived an opening drive TD by CLU to win their first game, 24-14.

First-time starting QB Mickey Inns shook off some opening jitters to manage the win, mostly by handing off to RB Josh Hill and Hill's replacement Stephen Nasca.

Brent did start the game and rotated snaps with 4 other DE's. He played well and I'll update his stats when they become available.

Juliet went to the Made in Hawaii Festival today and brought back a Lomi Stick. It's a really nice one, too!

Guava stick that we can use to replace the loop that Brent took to Oregon with him last week.

She said the event was very crowded and there was lots of neat things and food.

Sailor Blue's Birthday

We were at Murphy's Bar and Grill last night to celebrate Jerry Boster's Birthday with his wife, Janice.

He had a successful bid at a fundraising auction for a catered event by Don and Marian Murphy.

We were surprised by the food that was served. It was a menu that was filled with items that I had never seen on their regular menu.

Salmon served on a bed of watercress. Very moist and tender.

Barbeque Chicken Thighs, Baby Bok Choy, and Corn.

The star item was this suckling pig that Don Murphy brought out himself. The presentation was terrific with all of the meat having been shredded and laid in front of the hollowed out shell of the carcass. The flash prevents seeing the transluscence of the skin from showing up but it was masterful.

And the snout was shortly gobbled up.

That was Robin Gomes (addahknowjoe) who presented Jerry with a poster that he created in his graphics shop. Our own Captain America!

The surprise entertainment for the evening was the result of another successful bid at the same fundraising event for Japan Tsunami Relief.

It was a performance by Hoku-award winner Mailani Makainai!

What a treat!

Of course, Marian Murphy is the consummate hostess as always.

It was a terrific evening and we were glad that we were fortunate to have shared it with Jerry and Janice.

Makapuu Lighthouse

We joined Shannon and Jim Wood for their "Night Before the Full Moon Hike" to the Makapu'u Lighthouse. The goal was to reach the summit in time to see the moon rise.

Juliet has been wanting to do this hike for years and it was the first time either of us have been there.

We set out from the parking area at 4:30 and were amazed by some of the views we saw!

We made it to the top! Whew!

After a few minutes to catch our breath, someone spotted the moon! It had already risen from behind Molokai.

We caught some nice views on the way down as the sun was setting.

We went to the Linfield College Hawaiian Club Picnic on Sunday.

This was the first event of the new school year...it's Brent's Senior year so it was also the first of the "last events" for us!

Blackout Bingo that had them get signatures of people that they got to meet.

Linfield Spring Football

Watched one of Brent's practices while we were in McMinnville. They start each practice at 6 in the morning. We "slept in" (remember, they are 3 hours ahead of Hawaii time) and got there about 7.

Division III does not allow the teams to practice in pads. These guys are used to the cold weather but were still geared up for some weather...we were downright cold!

This is a sequence of shots that show Brent playing Defensive End on the near side.

This was his last Spring Ball heading into his Senior season in the fall. It will be a bittersweet time then.

I went to dinner with John Collins (Rasu Begasu) while I was in Vegas this week.

Chef Uehara is very masterful with his presentations and serves very fresh seafood.

Crispy Rice Cake with Spicy Ahi. Very tasty; the rice cakes even by themselves are very flavorful.

The chef's mastery with the knife can be seen in these sculptures he does with the avocado seeds. The bear behind the turtle is a boy; you can see proof when you pick him up!

Linfield Luau 2011

We went to McMinnville, OR to watch Brent perform in his 3rd Linfield College Hawaiian Club Luau.

The students put in many, many hours of planning, practice and preparation for the event. The day's festivities include a luau that the kids plan. The food has been provided by Patrick's Hawaiian Food in Vancouver, WA for the past few years and is well-received by all. This is held in the Fieldhouse along with a Country Store that attracts many local residents that includes lots of Hawaii expats.

The highlight of the evening is the show in the gym.

The event drew over 1200 people this year!

It's nice that friends from surrounding colleges come to support their high school buddies, The two guys on the outside came from Southern Oregon U. and Western Oregon U.

This was the second year that Brent and his cousin, Tori have been in the show together.

Hawaii won on Saturday and clinched at least a tie for the WAC championship. That is quite the accomplishment since they were picked to finish last in the Conference before the season started.

St. Louis won their 3rd State Championship on Friday night. It was Ryan's first year coaching at the varsity level as an assistant coach. We were happy that he was able to be a part of his Alma Mater's football success this season. It was really special since we were able to bring Brent home for the weekend.

He was able to come back because he wasn't selected to travel with the Linfield 52-man playoff squad for their game in St. Paul, MN.

The Wildcats played a terrific 2nd round game but came up short in the second Overtime period and fell to the St. Thomas Tommies to end their season. That was the only downer of the weekend.

Wildcats back in the Playoffs!`

Linfield actually clinched a berth in the Division III football playoffs last week but the suspense since then has been about their seeding.

The brackets were announced on ESPN-News today and they are a #5 seed in the West Region. Normally that would mean that they would play on the road against the #4 seed, Cal Lutheran, but the Kingsmen had plans to demolish their stadium immediately following their last home game as they move to a new venue next year.

So the Wildcats will be hosting CLU on Saturday in a repeat of last year's playoff opening round.

There's quite a rivalry that has developed since last year when Linfield ended CalLu's season. Both teams started their season this year with a rematch in Thousand Oaks, CA. The Kingsmen won a close game in comeback fashion and left the then #4 ranked Linfield with what would be the only blemish on their record so far this season.

The loss sent the Wildcats tumbling out of the DIII Top Ten and undoubtedly spoiled their chances for a high playoff seed despite going through the Northwest Conference schedule undefeated with a string of convincing wins. Fortune smiled on the 'Cats as they were placed in the bracket opposite the Kingsmen who were unable to bid for a host position.

Linfield made no move in the NCAA Regional Rankings again. No one ranked above them lost last week so it wasn't a surprise.

The bottom half regional ranking probably would mean an opening round game on the road in the play-offs and, barring huge upsets, throughout the playoffs as well.

Official brackets come out this coming Sunday afternoon.

Friday Night Lights at Kahuku

We drove to Kahuku High School last night to watch St. Louis play Kahuku in an Interleague game.

It was a great high school football atmosphere. The estimate of the attendance was 4500 and there was a good representation of Crusader fans among that number.

Ryan was really excited about the game because it was a matchup featuring the #2 ranked Saints travelling for the first time up to the North Shore to face the top-ranked Red Raiders.

The game started off great for St. Louis with a touchdown on the second play.

The entire first half was terrific but too many mistakes in the second half doomed the Crusaders as the Red Raiders prevailed, 49-27.

Football is back

Ryan has moved up to coaching at the Varsity level at St.Louis this season. He's working with the Tight Ends, the position he played in college. He's real happy and excited; it's the first time the Crusaders have used a TE on a regular basis since the 80's.

They have a big game at Kahuku this Friday. It'll be #1 versus #2 in the State for an early season showdown. WooHoo!

Brent started his third football camp at Linfield last Wednesday.

He started off great in testing and looked to be having a great camp. He's wearing #54 in purple. Here's some video from wildcat11: (he shows up at 0:14, 1:42 and 2:09)

He called last night and said that he strained his left foot yesterday so he'll sit out and rest it for a while. Hopefully, it will heal quickly. He was really looking forward to this season and worked hard this past summer getting ready.

But more importantly, we did find some great news! Brent got a "B" in Chem 162! And his 161 grade got upped to a C+ so it was a successful summer for him!

We spent most of Sunday out by the pool at the Hilton.

We started out with breakfast at the Rainbow Lanai where everyone had the buffet breakfast. It was pretty decent: omelette station; breakfast fare; fruit. Juliet really enjoyed the lox and bagels.

By late afternoon everyone was pretty "pooled-out" so we headed back up to the rooms to cool off a little.

We went back down for dinner at Tropics Bar & Grill.

We used a 2-night stay I won from a contest on the Warrior Beat and also got an adjoining room for the boys and their girlfriends.

We got together with some Tsaiko friends on Maui last night.

We finally made it to the Tsaiko-favorite Tiffany's in Wailuku.

From the left is me, Juliet, Brian (blog name, duffer), Ed (whitey) and Brian's son, Kyeton. It was nice to see these guys on their "home turf". Prior to this we had only seen them on Oahu but when we decided to come over to attend another party on Maui this weekend arranging to meet up with them was a must!

The food was terrific! What a menu...4 full pages of just about every bar pupu you ever could want.
There was also some dinner menu items but we just ordered everything Ala Carte.

We celebrated my birthday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Tropics Bar & Grill.

Terrific sunset view just as we were seated and a nice evening with the family.

A complimentary birthday dessert- Coffee Cheesecake. Very good!

Kikuhana in Las Vegas

I was hosted by John Collins at Kikuhana Restaurant in Las Vegas.

It's located at Rainbow and Sahara in a small strip mall. It's a very nice neighborhood place that belies the quality and authenticity of the Japanese and Okinawan food that is served there.
The chef is Satoru Uehara who owns it along with his wife, Akemi.

Sashimi Platter
I was amazed at how fresh the items were despite being in the middle of a desert!

Spicy Tuna Sashimi with Crispy Onions
It is very interesting how the onions are prepared; almost like crunchy flakes. At first glance I thought they were bonito flakes. Really goes good with the sashimi!

Devil Shrimp
The shells are sliced so that they open up to look like "oni" but it is really "oishii"!

Spicy Tuna on Rice Cake
The rice cake is pan fried in a shoyu sauce; very tasty by itself but really good with the tuna and then kicked up with the jalapeno.
The Plum wine was very tasty as well.

It's a shame that the detail of Chef Uehara's handiwork can't be seen in the photo. It was amazing watching him carve this masterpiece.

Linfield Luau 2010

This was our second time attending the Luau at Linfield. The theme this year was 96 Degrees in the Shade.
The students did another terrific job with the show last night!

Of course, the parental support was tremendous again and even more special because one of the Freshmen parents worked so hard in making these costumes for the Tongan number, Wini Fotu Malimali. They actually pounded out the kapa! The kids were so blown away when they saw the costumes for the first time on Friday.

This year Brent was joined at Linfield by his cousin, Tori Ann. They surprised her parents and us on this number, Holo Wa'apa, when they paired up for the number right in front of our seats!

It was fun watching "the kids" dyeing Easter eggs.

We had Brunch at John Dominis today. It looks like they are in their last month of operation so it was nice to dine there one last time.

Since opening in the 70's it may be a little dated but it is still a pleasant experience.

Of course, the view is still spectacular.

It must be the Polynesian Paralysis setting in but maybe I'll post some pics of the food after a nap!

Their Buffet is a really good value. Unfortunately, the food was so good, I forgot to stop and take any pictures!

New Principal for St. Louis School

St. Louis announced yesterday the Board approval of the hiring of former Hawaii State DOE Superintendent Pat Hamamoto as its new Principal.

The news reports said that at an assembly of the school's 650 students there was a spontaneous standing ovation. This was good news that the students recognized that her appointment should provide a great opportunity for establishing stability at the school.

Many people have expressed surprise at the announcement since Hamamoto only recently retired from 34 years of service in the DOE as the head of the entire public school system.

However, for myself, the surprise was reading that the school population had dropped to only 650 boys in grades 5 thru 12! With plans to eliminate the lowest grade level next year, the size of the student body will be about about half of what it was when our oldest son started there only 15 years ago.

I hope that Ms Hamamoto is able to establish a solid curriculum in a timely manner and can quickly reverse the decline in enrollment.

Old Honolulu

Someone sent me some pictures of Honolulu from the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's.

If you arrived via plane, it might have been on PanAm and as you drove out of the airport you would drive past this fountain.
Many people now complain about the lack of air conditioning in the main terminal. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright who looked at the site then and no doubt felt the trade winds that he felt would provide natural cooling through the open-air lobby. Subsequent construction of parking structures and freeway ramps in the open lots you see in this picture have all but blocked the trades!

On your way into Waikiki you might stop by Kapiolani Drive-in at the corner of Ala Moana Blvd and Ena Rd. The Wailana Condominium (and Coffee shop) are located there now.

Tops Coffee Shop was on Kalakaua Ave. across from Ft. DeRussy.

On your way into Downtown you would pass by Aloha Motors.

In all, from the mountains of North Carolina to eastern Massachusetts, this winter storm as the potential to impact as many as 50 million people before everything is said and done.

A large swath of historic and dangerous December snows of 10 to 15 inches will bury many of the major cities in the Mid-Atlantic to Northeast.
The heaviest snows are forecast for northern Virginia including Washington, DC to Baltimore and Philadelphia where 1 foot is likely and even 1 to 2 feet around Washington, DC.

Wildcats' Season Comes to an End

The Linfield Wildcats couldn't hold off a late surge by Wisconsin-Whitewater and were denied entry into the National Championship game next Saturday in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.

It was a terrific run by the team. They started the season unranked in the Top 25 and not even a pick to win the Northwest Conference.

They ended up winning the Conference and beating 6 ranked teams this season and came out of the toughest bracket in the play-offs to get to today's game undefeated.

After getting down 10-0, they stormed back with 17 unanswered points and the lead heading into the final quarter. But a great team makes great plays when they need to and that's what Whitewater did. They scored the last 17 points and ended up winning, 27-17.

It was a memorable season for Linfield and we'll look forward to next season along with Brent.
